Trailhead's off Forest Service Road 475 near Brevard, about forty minutes from Asheville. Small gravel lot. Gets full by nine on weekends, so either set an alarm or go on a Tuesday.
The first mile tricks you into thinking this is easy — soft needles underfoot, hemlocks overhead, a creek running somewhere you can hear but not see. Then the switchbacks tighten and the forest gives way to bare granite, and you realize you're climbing the dome itself. It's 1,700 feet of gain, and the last quarter-mile is fully exposed rock. Bring real shoes.
The top is a broad granite slab facing Pisgah National Forest. On clear days the ridges stack up in that blue-on-blue way the southern Appalachians do. Hawks at eye level. Wind that makes the heat below seem like somebody else's problem.
Late May is the sweet spot — rhododendrons blooming on the lower trail, decent temps up top. 6.5 miles round trip.
